Kakinada Smart City will have Smart Roads Soon.

Here are the Exclusive details of Smart Roads in Kakinada Smart City.

Kakinada Smart City works are going in full swing. Presently the smart road works are going in Phase I.




Transforming roads into Smart Streets:

Transforming roads into Smart Streets has been conceptualized by the Employer, to create 21st-century public realm infrastructure for all strata of the society. This entails comprehensive upgrading of the public Right of Way (ROW) of the main road which includes (but is not limited to) – refurbishment of existing carriageway, laying of new footpaths and cycle tracks, shifting of select utilities from its current location to new location (under footpaths), external development works for landscape, hardscape, street furniture, lighting. Transforming existing bus stops as smart bus stops clustered with public toilets and ATM is to be carried out.

The Entire road from Sarpavaram Junction is to be taken up for execution in 2 (Two) phases:

Phase-I: The stretches from a) Sarpavaram junction to masjid junction b) MSN Charities to Balayogi statue junction.
The refurbishment of existing carriage, laying of new footpath, cycle track shifting and selected utilities from its current location to new location (under greenery), external development works for landscape, handscape, street furniture, lighting, transforming the existing bus stops as a smart bus stops clustered public toilets and water ATM.

Phase –II: The stretch from Masijd junction to MSN Charites. The stretch of 2.100kms to be taken up for execution in phase-II , after completing Phase-I.
The stretch is having less ROW (Right of way). The necessary action plan will be taken up to be obtain sufficient ROW for providing smart city infrastructure. To gain sufficient time to clean the hurdles, the stretch is scheduled to be taken up in phase-II.

The key features of smart streets are listed below:

- Uniform Carriage-Way width along the length of the road wherever possible
- Additional space allocated towards provision of wide footpaths
- Development of cycle tracks wherever feasible
- Layering/ Sequencing of Services
- The trenches for maintenance to be clearly labelled
- New utility networks to be laid, no replacement of old networks
- Construction of Bus bays, Auto bays wherever essential.
- Beautification and Landscaping of the footpath, junctions
- Provision of Street furniture (Signage’s, Lane marking)
- Provision Pedestrian footpath LED lights

a. The approach towards this shall be:

  •  Re-align Street Center (median), if required = Equal carriageway where ‘To and Fro’ Traffic is there
  •  Reduction in carriageway may be considered wherever required
  1. Resultant reduction in unnecessary over speeding, traffic calming
  2. Resultant in creation of safe urban (inner city) streets
  3. Equitable distribution of Right of Way (RoW) for pedestrians, cycles and vehicles
  4. Wider sidewalks for safe pedestrian space, Opportunities for creating urban spaces (dedicated hawker zones)
  5. Extra space to provide dedicated/regularized on-street parking to minimize haphazard parking

• Improvements in Junction Geometry

  • Efficient processing of traffic volumes
  • Safe crossing for pedestrians through introduction of Table Tops




• Introduction of Dedicated Cycle Tracks / Shared Cycle Tracks

  • Promoting Non-motorized vehicles

• Introduction of Bus-Stop and Public Toilet Cluster

  • Other facilities such as ATM, water ATM to be part of the cluster

• Introduction of utility corridor under footpaths

  • Efficient use of space, Ensures avoiding of un-necessary road cuttings for utilities maintenance

  3. Accessibility to physically impaired

• Public Amenities:

  1. Bus stop shelters
  2. Kiosks
  3. ATMs
  4. Dustbins
  5. Off-street parking

• Safety features

  1. Pedestrian crossing markings
  2. Signals
  3. Signages
  4. Pedestrian Lights
  5. Barricades/separators

• Underground utilities:

  • A trench for all utilities like:

          Water supply line, sewerage line Only space allocation            Gas line – Space Allocation Only
          Electricity line, telephone line, TV cable line, TSE Line –            In This Project Scope etc.
